YAF Activist Aaron Marcus Responds to Leftist, Anti-Semitic Death Threats at Rutgers

YAF activist Aaron Marcus (Rutgers Univerity)--who has been featured on Fox News, GBTV, Wall Street Journal, and the Huffington Post--sat down with YAF to give his perspective on the rapant anti-Semitic threats against him at Rutgers. You can also read his blog on YAF's The Quad further documenting these occurrences. Today, the Huffington Post reported on the ungoing investigation by the Department of Education: The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is investigating Rutgers University for its response to alleged anti-Semitic harassment, according to documents obtained by The Huffington Post. The Zionist Organization of America, a right-leaning Jewish advocacy group, presented the government with claims that Jewish students at Rutgers have been the object of anti-Semitic intimidation on Facebook by an employee of the university -- and that the university did not respond properly. "OCR has one open complaint involving Rutgers University," Daren Briscoe, a U.S. Education Department spokesperson, confirmed in an email. "The complaint alleges that the University failed to respond appropriately to a complaint alleging that students were subjected to harassment and different treatment because of their national origin (Jewish ancestry/ethnicity). The OCR complaint is currently under investigation."

The 7 Activist Uses of Digital Tech: the Case of Popular Resistance in Egypt (webinar)

When thinking about the use of digital technology and social media in resistance we are often overwhelmed by anecdote. Look at a dozen cases and you will see three dozen examples of how activists are using digital technology in their work. This endless variety can be confusing not only to observers, but to activists themselves. There are few guidelines for what tech can and cannot do or strategic frameworks to use in planning whether and how to use digital technology in a campaign. In this webinar Mary Joyce, Founder of the Meta-Activism Project, will present a framework that divides digital technology into seven activist functions: documenting, co-creating, mobilizing, broadcasting, synthesizing, protecting and transferring resources. She will use the recent case of the Egyptian Revolution to explore these functions. Mary is an expert in the field of digital activism and travels the world training, speaking, and consulting on the topic. In 2007 she founded DigiActive.org, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to helping grassroots activists around the world use digital technology to increase their impact, and in 2008 she was New Media Operations Manager for Barack Obama's national presidential campaign. She is also the editor of Digital Activism Decoded, the first book explicitly devoted to the topic of digital activism, to be published in the spring of 2010.
